2011 Best of the Bay Photo Contest

Photos must be entered in one of four categories—Boats, Places, People or Wildlife—and must have been taken on or along the Chesapeake Bay or its tributaries.

The entries will be judged on the merits of image quality, subject matter and composition by Chesapeake Bay Magazine editors, art staff and photographers. The winners in each category will receive cash awards of $200 (first place), $150 (second place) and $100 (third place), and the winning photos will be published as part of our 2011 Best of the Bay report.

How to Enter: All entries must be 8 x 10 color prints (on photographic paper) and must be clearly labeled on the back with the photographer's name, address, e-mail, daytime and evening phone numbers, category entered, camera used, and a very brief description of the photograph. To help celebrate the launch of One New Change, The Times would like to invite readers to take part in a photography competition to celebrate great British buildings. The prize is a master class with Photographer Herbert Ypma and the winner will also have the chance to be the first member of the public to take a shot of St Paul’s Cathedral and the surrounding cityscape from the roof terrace of One New Change, London’s latest landmark building, designed by the architect Jean Nouvel.

The winning entry will be published in The Times on November 18, and he or she will be asked to come for his or her master class on Sunday, November 14. The roof terrace opens to the public on 18th November.

The theme In this occasion WPGA wants to select images that are telling a story. It can be a real story or a fiction created by the imagination of the artist. The theme is open: a story of clouds and storms, a love affair, a political statement, your family party or the houses of your neighbourhood. It could be a fairy story digitalized by you imagination, or the life of the natives in Peru. Or perhaps it is the story of a wedding, the aftermath of a natural disaster, or illustrative images of your last trip in India. There are no limitations to your work provided you’re submitting a story with images or a coherent body of work in terms of thematic displayed. Telling a story with images is interacting with the viewers to show a mood, an environment, a editorial statement or a particular event.

Both color and black and white (including duotones, toned, and all kind of alternative processes) will be accepted to be screened. Series can also be a mix of images in black and white and color. All kind of processes, including digital manipulation will be accepted.

The selection process:

There will be two screenings.

First screening

Selection will be done by WPGA’s artistic and editorial staff.

The first screening will be conducted to accept or reject the submitted works. There’s is no entry fee to submit your series to the first screening, and you may submit a maximum of 5 series.

Within 1 week after the reception of the images sent for consideration of the jurors in the first screening, submitters will be notified by email detailing which series have been accepted and which have been rejected. Together with the notification’s email a brief structured feedback will be provided.

Second screening

Selection will be done by Julio Hardy, WPGA’s Managing Director

Accepted images in the first screening will be included in the second screening and entered in the competition. Those works which passed the first screening will be exhibited for one year in the online WonderPick gallery, and available for sale.

During the second screening, 20 series will be selected to be featured in book Storyteller.

Entry fees (only for those works which pass the first screening)

Participants in the second screening will have to pay an entry fee within 1 week after receiving the notification that his/her series have pass the first screening and have been entered into the competition.

National Geographic invites photographers from around the world to enter the 2010 National Geographic Photography Contest. The grand-prize winner of the global contest will receive $10,000 (USD) — the first monetary prize ever offered by National Geographic magazine for a photo contest — and the photographer’s winning image will be published in worldwide editions of National Geographic magazine. Open to both professional photographers and amateur photo enthusiasts, the grand-prize winner also will receive a trip to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual National Geographic Photography Seminar in January 2011.

Eligibility: Contest is open only to individuals who have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry and who do NOT reside in Arizona, Cuba, Iran, New Jersey, North Korea, Puerto Rico, the Province of Quebec, Sudan, Syria or Vermont. The Categories for entries are: (1) People, (2) Places, and (3) Nature (the "Categories"). There is no limit on the number of entries per person. Each entry must comply with the following requirements (the "Photograph Requirements"):

Limit All digital files must be 5 megabytes or smaller, must be in JPEG or JPG format, and must be at least 1,600 pixels wide (if a horizontal image) or 1,600 pixels tall (if a vertical image).

Editing acceptable? Minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable. Hand tinting is acceptable, as is cropping. Fish-eye lenses are acceptable. High dynamic range images (HDR) and stitched panoramas are acceptable only if the combined parts are all made around the same time.

Prizes: The First Place winner in each Category will each receive US$2,500, and his/her winning photograph will be published in National Geographic magazine. One Grand Prize winner will receive, in addition to the First Place prize, US$7,500 and a trip to the District of Columbia, USA from Jan. 11 to Jan. 14, 2011 to participate in the National Geographic Photography Seminar. Trip includes round-trip coach class air transportation between a major airport near winner’s home and Washington, D.C.; three nights hotel accommodations in Washington; a behind-the-scenes tour of National Geographic headquarters; and access to the all-day Seminar on Jan. 13, where Grand Prize winner’s winning entry will be projected and the winner will be presented with his/her check for the Grand Prize. The Grand Prize is non-transferable and no cash alternative is available.

The Summer Show 2010 2011

The Summer Show Project offers the unique chance for artists to work directly with FOLEYgallery , creating new work to be curated in a group exhibition.

This initiative will provide an opportunity for emerging photographers to have their work seen, recognized and reviewed by fellow artists, gallery directors, book editors and curators.

Upon acceptance, you will work on your own and with the guidance of gallery owner Michael Foley to create new work dedicated to a theme that will be suggested by the curatorial panel. A total of 8 photographers will be selected by the panel to participate.

From January to April you will meet with Michael Foley either in the gallery or via iChat/Skype for two 30 minute sessions where you can discuss your progress and share what you have been working on.

In May, a final edit will be made and two photographs from each photographer will be curated into a group exhibition at FOLEYgallery opening in June 2011. In addition to the work of these 8 photographers, additional selections will be curated into the show from some of the most well known contemporary photographers working today.

This is the second year for The Summer Show Project. We invite you to submit your work to participate in this unique opportunity and share the experience of exposure, guidance, feedback, community, recognition and support.

We invite photographers from all disciplines to apply. The Summer Show Project is open to all photographers world wide.

Red Bull Illume @ Photokina

Fresh from the exhibit tour in Dublin, the ten award winning photographs from Red Bull Illume 2010 will be exhibited next week at Photokina in Germany, the world’s most important trade fair for photography and imaging.

Billed this year as the kick off for Photography 3.0, Photokina will present the latest developments, trends and products in professional and amateur photography. The trade fair, which takes place in Cologne (GER) every two years, is the only event in the world that brings together the media, technology and business sectors in the industry for consumers and professionals.

At Photokina 2008, 1,579 companies from 46 countries took part and over 169,000 visitors from 161 countries attended the fair.

Chris Burkard’s winning image from Red Bull Illume as well as the nine other category winners are sure to be one of the highlights of the trade fair. According to Red Bull Illume judge Laura Luykenaar from Salt Magazine, the photos are a must-see. "I think Red Bull Illume is important for this type of photography. It brings together all the action sports that you don’t always see on TV and shows what the feel and the culture for these sports are like."

For Wings category winner Marcel Lämmerhirt, the event offers him another chance to see his stunning diving shot in the flesh once more. "I love the shot. It’s two years old now, but I really like it. To see it big on the screen is really nice."

Other highlights include a special show on the future of 3D and 360° photography. A Matrix Ring will also be on show in Hall 4.1, giving visitors the chance to be part of their own Matrix-style photo or film.

Amateur and professional photographers will also be eager to get their hands on the latest cameras, lenses and gadgets from all the major manufacturers – including Leica (Hall 2.1, stand A010-BO12), Lowepro (Hall 5.2, stand C010) and Sandisk (Hall 2.1, stand D041).

The lightboxes of the 10 category winners will be on show at Hall 4.2, Stand D011 from Tuesday, September 21 until Sunday, September 26 between 10am and 6pm. Visitors will also be able to buy copies of the Red Bull Illume Photobook 2010.

ENLIGHTENMENT AT RED BULL ILLUME UNVEILING CEREMONY AS CHRIS BURKARD WINS IMAGE QUEST 2010

Enlightenment arrived at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland tonight August 31, as Chris Burkard was named Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2010 winner at an emotional unveiling ceremony packed with photographers, competition judges, athletes and special guests.

The 24-year-old professional photographer’s image of surfer Peter Mendria riding waves on Chile’s West Coast in golden sunlight was named Overall Winner of the world’s biggest action and adventure sports photography competition out of 22,764 photos submitted to the contest by nearly 5000 photographers.

“I’m overjoyed, it’s hard to put into words being able to be nominated and to win this award in front of all your piers and people I respect, I’m truly blessed.” Said Burkard.

As the sun set, the Image Quest’s top 50 images – the five best from ten categories – were revealed for the first time ever and illuminated on 2m high lightboxes. The energetic ceremony, which focussed on putting the photographers in the spotlight, was held in the magnificent and historic Trinity College Dublin dining hall used in the Harry Potter movies.

American windsurfer Robby Naish and Red Bull Cliff Diving World Champion Orlando Duque (COL) were among the guests and Irish TV star Sile Seoige hosted the ceremony while Red Bull Illume Judge Eileen Ryan of USA Today presented Burkard with the Winner’s trophy.

Fifty-three judges from respected picture desks around the globe voted over three rounds to determine ten category winners as well as the Overall Winner. The outstanding quality of the photography made voting a tough job for the judges.

“I thought the pictures were fantastic, everyone of them was a difficult choice: it was hard to make a decision between the ones that won and the ones that didn’t,” said Red Bull Illume judge Alan Sparrow (UK). “The defining line between them was really close.”

Burkard was presented with Leica S2 camera and lenses.

“I would never have imagined owning a camera like this,” Burkard said. “It’s worth more than the house I live in!”

Photography Award. The Magnum Expression Photography Award was established by Magnum
Photos and HP with the goal of raising awareness and inspiring change through projects using photography as an expressive medium. Its mission is to discover and illuminate compelling documentary photography.
A panel of four Magnum photographers and one HP Large Format Printing representative will select 20 finalists. The Times has launched the ninth Times Young Photographer of the Year Award. The competition, which for the second year running is sponsored by Canon, seeks to find the country’s best young photographer. The winner will win a six-month full-time contract with The Times, where they will be trained in the skills of photojournalism.

The winner will be someone who can show flair and imagination – whose work is visually exciting. Entrants will need to submit photographs in three different categories:

It’s up to you to interpret those different subjects and send us three images – one image for each category – that you think will make the judges sit up and pay attention. Once again, we look forward to this year’s exhibit and providing an opportunity for our community to reflect upon and deepen its awareness that embracing our differences, respecting the views of others and standing up against hatred and prejudice will lead to a better world for everyone. Respecting the beliefs of others is not only a way of thinking and feeling - but most importantly, of acting.

Eligibility:Artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers, students – all ages – everyone can participate. You may submit more than one entry; however, no more than two images per artist will be chosen for display. National and international submissions are encouraged.

Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “Embracing Our Differences.®” The artwork will also be evaluated on how effectively it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size – 16 feet wide by 12 feet high. Artists are encouraged to use bold saturated colors and strong lines. Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals.

The 2010 FotoWeek DC International Awards Competition will recognize and honor extraordinary work in photography from all over the world. FotoWeek DC, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, is committed to raising awareness of the power of photography everywhere, in all its forms.

Now in its third year, the FotoWeek DC International Awards Competition continues to innovate and find new ways to engage photographers around the world. Highlights for 2010 include a new Mobile Photo category, special price breaks for multiple submissions and a focus on Environmental Conservation, in celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity.

The World’s Best Action and Adventure Sports Photography To Be Unveiled in Dublin

The best 50 photos from nearly 23,000 action and adventure sports images that were entered into the Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2010 will be displayed in Dublin, Ireland at a stunning unveiling exhibition from September 2, 2010.

As night time falls, the 50 winning images will illuminate the court of Trinity College. The university, in the heart of Ireland’s capital city, will host the exhibition for ten days. This is arguably the world’s greatest collection of action and adventure sports photography and it is fully open to the public.

Founded in the 16th century, Trinity College is one of the world’s most prestigious universities, boasts a long and rich history of artistic excellence, and remains an important part of Ireland’s cultural history.

Amongst its most famous alumni are writers such as Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker (Dracula), while it’s also home to the world famous ‘Book of Kells’ a priceless eighth-century artifact.

Fifty-three judges from around the world are voting to find the photos that stand out most for their composition, creativity and artistic flair. The judges will also vote for ten category winners and one overall winner – the results of which will be kept under close guard and will be announced at the Unveiling Ceremony.

“These are truly incredible images, I was floored,” said Judge Nick Hamilton Director of Photography at Transworld Snowboarding. “It will be amazing to see them as a collection.”

“’Staggered’ is the word that comes to mind when considering the quality of images in this year’s Red Bull Illume,” says Steve Dickinson of Adventure Magazine. “As a judge I was staggered by the quality, staggered at the variety and staggered by the creativity. I spend my professional life immersed in action based images and this year’s entries to Red Bull Illume are without doubt the very cream of the world’s best action images.”

As the title suggests, we’re looking for a photographer – but not just any old photographer. We’re after someone who can do justice to South Africa’s stunning scenery, wonderful wildlife and fabulous people.

The lucky winner of this competition will win a two-day masterclass with professional photographer Alf Khumalo in Johannesburg, followed by an all-expenses paid trip around South Africa as the official photographer on an all-action adventure tour. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: expect high-octane excitement and the chance to take some spectacular pictures. The winner will spend around two weeks in South Africa.

The photos you submit need to capture one of three themes – action, landscape or people. You can only enter one photo for each theme. Three category winners will each receive a book of Alf Khumalo’s photography. One of the three will be chosen as the overall winner.

In recognition of the United Nations declaring 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity, Project AWARE Foundation and SeaWeb’s Marine Photobank are calling for entries for the third “Ocean in Focus” Conservation Photography Contest that feature species in need of protection, the human impacts upon them and their environments, and the importance of conserving biodiversity.

Photographers of all backgounds—including conservationists, scientists, divers, travelers and students—and at all skill levels, ranging from amateur to professional, are encouraged to vie for the Grand Prize package that includes US$500 cash as well as many marine-conservation related gifts. Four additional prizes packages will be available: three for honorable mentions and a “Biodiversity Award” package that will be bestowed upon a submission that particularly highlights the need for biodiversity.

During this International Year of Biodiversity, scientists and conservationists are especially concerned about recent failures of legislators to protect marine species. The aim of the brief is to produce a photograph that explores the theme ‘Exposed’

Your image should draw on themes explored within the Tate Modern’s Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera exhibition.

The exhibition explores issues around exposure, voyeurism and surveillance. It features a range of photographs created by well-known artists, photo-journalists, amateur photographers and those using technology like CCTV and camera phones.

We’d like you to think about these different kinds of imagery and how we experience photography in different areas of art, photojournalism and everyday life.

We want to see your creative response to these images and ideas. We’d like to see how you think the themes affect the world around you. Consider the increasing use of surveillance cameras, camera phones, and the circulation of images in the media and on the internet. Look around you and observe different ways we experience ‘exposure’ through imagery.

We are looking for a clear image to represent the above theme/s. Your photograph should record and communicate the essence of your idea.

Canon Parks Photo Contest 2010

5TH ANNUAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE PARKS PHOTO CONTEST

Contestants will have the opportunity to submit their best “Nature” image – the theme for this year’s contest.

The contest invites participants to compete within two divisions; the teen division,

for entrants ages 13-17 and the adult division,
for entrants ages 18 and older.

Canon in the Parks Contest
All applicants from the teen and adult divisions will be able to submit their photos through the contest page at the Canon Digital Learning Center Web site: www.usa.canon.com/parks.

Eligibility: US ONLY

FREE TO ENTER

Prizes: The winning photographers from each division will be announced in December and will be awarded with some of Canon’s latest photography equipment. Along with receiving Canon products, the Grand Prize winner will also receive a trip to a U.S. National Park of his or her choice, within the lower 48 states. To highlight the creative experience, all winning images and honorable mentions will be displayed on the Canon Digital Learning Center.

New Portfolio Category at Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2010

In this category we are looking for a small body of work (10 images). The theme is open and any subject will be considered, however, it's important the images work with one another to form a coherent idea. You will need to upload a 100 word statement to support the images.

This category will be judged by members of The Royal Photographic Society and there is an entrance fee of £10 for each portfolio. A payment will need to be made via PayPal before you are able to begin uploading your shots.*

Please note there are no refunds for entering the Portfolio paid-for competition category.

The winner of the category will receive a Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera with 18-135mm EF-S Lens and will, in addition, to a complimentary membership to the Royal Photographic Society, receive an invitation to submit a body of work free of charge for a Licentiateship or Associateship assessment with the RPS within the following 12 months.

Vancouver USA Tourism Office Holds Contest for Photographers of All Skill Levels

Now through October, 15, 2010, the Tourism Office is inviting both amateur and professional photographers to submit up to four photos that inspire visitors to “Discover the Original” Vancouver. The entries may include natural scenes, urban landscapes, wildlife; and/or human interest.

A total of six winning photos will be selected by November 1, 2010. The photographers who enter the top three winning photos will receive a one-night stay and a dining certificate at one of three Vancouver hotels and restaurants. Photographers submitting the other three winning photos will receive a dining certificate to one of three local restaurants. Additionally, winning photos may be selected to appear in the Vancouver USA Regional Visitors Guide.

Eligibility: The photo contest is open to the public excluding Vancouver USA Regional Tourism Office employees and immediate family members.

Limit: Each contestant may submit up to four (4) photo entries.
